The Board of Saint Francis quickly found it was able to make a difference in the lives of the residents in Holy Family Home. The Little Sisters of the Poor is an order founded by Jeanne Jugan in 1839. The Little Sisters of the Poor's first Home in he US was established in New York in 1868. The Little Sisters of the Poor was founded by Jeanne Jugan.
As a humble women in France, Jeanne opened her heart and her home to Jesus Christ
in the person of an elderly blind woman, Anne Chauvin. Jeanne Jugan carried Anne through the streets of her small town and then placed her in her own bed. That event set into motion a wave of compassion and charity that spread throughout France, through her spiritual daughters and throughout the earth. By the time Jeanne died in 1879, the Little Sister were serving the elderly in nine countries—including America.
Jeanne Jugan was beatified in 1982 by Pope John Paul, and she was canonized in 2009 by Pope Benedict. Holy Family Home in Philadelphia offers residents three levels of care and is home to almost a hundred seniors.
